Understanding Trenchless Repairs

Home or business owners who have ever had to deal with pipe repairs know how invasive the process can be. Accessing buried pipes for repairs or replacement can cause massive damage to a property, not to mention the high cost associated with all of that excavation.

Engineers developed equipment and processes that allow plumbers to make pipe repairs without digging trenches or damaging the landscape or concrete, overcoming some of the drawbacks of traditional pipe repairs.

Trenchless pipe repairs are one of the latest plumbing advancements, allowing for cheaper and easier pipe repairs. Here is a quick guide from local experts to help owners understand the trenchless pipe repair process.

How Do Trenchless Repairs Work?

Instead of needing extensive excavation to access underground piping, particularly sewer lines, trenchless pipe repair methods only need to access the pipes at the beginning and the end. Two access holes are dug to expose the pipe, and the pipe is cut. A steel cable is passed through the piping, and from there, one of three methods will be used for repairs:

  • Cured-In-Place Pipe: This method uses epoxy to realign the damaged sewer line. The epoxy cures in place and seals all leaks and imperfections, allowing sewage to flow freely once the pipe is restored.
  • Pipe Bursting: The sewer line cable is fitted with a special head that shatters the existing pipe as it is pulled back through. As the head bursts the existing pipe, a new pipe is also pulled into place.
  • Slip Lining: Instead of bursting the existing pipe, the cable will pull a new, flexible pipe liner into it. This relines the interior of the pipe so that it is smooth and leak-free.

Which Issues Can Trenchless Pipe Repairs Address?

Trenchless sewer line repairs are very versatile and can be used to treat several circumstances. For example, trenchless sewer line repairs are excellent for fixing cracks or leaks that appear in clay or old iron sewer lines or as a result of corrosion. This prevents sewage from leaking out and tree roots from coming in. Additionally, trenchless sewer line repairs can fix minor pipe misalignment caused by settling or shifting soils.

Why Is Trenchless Pipe Repair Better?

save money Sewer line repairs can be expensive, and a huge portion of that cost is for excavation. Excavation causes high labor costs and wastes time when there are other options like trenchless sewer line repairs. In many cases, especially larger jobs, trenchless pipe repairs are cheaper than traditional repairs because they cut down on time and labor.

Traditional sewer line repairs are also notorious for ruining landscaping, driveways, sidewalks, and foundations. These methods leave all structures intact since they only need to access holes. This cuts down on property damage and further lowers the project's cost by preventing the need for secondary repairs due to property damage.
